If you are a person who is willing to put in the work and do everything you can to continuously learn, grow, and expand………keep reading.

If there was one thing I took away from my years as a Management Consultant, it was this

People Are Everything!

When I started this career out of high school I was drastically behind the curve.

On paper, I did not measure up to my peers being recruited out of top schools and I had a LOT of catching up to do. I felt like this kid:

(skip down to Question at Heart if you don’t care about the set up content)

LUCKILY…..and I can’t say luckily enough. Most of the senior consultants, managers, and beyond in the company were some of the brightest and most caring people out there.

They were highly skilled in both intellectual and emotional intelligence and if I was willing to be honest with them and ask questions, they were willing to do what it would take to sharpen my skills.

They were ok with me saying that I don’t know, if I was willing to take the time to learn. They wanted me to succeed and would give me everything I needed to get there.

In 6 years of management consulting I worked under the direction of the greatest mentors I could ever ask for.

I have had conversations over dinner that completely transformed my life. There have been 5 minute pep talks that made me completely rethink and then retool.

They pride themselves on performance management and establishing a high performing culture.

They have to. The people are the product that they are selling and literally the face of the brand that means everything to them.

It takes massive efforts from everyone.

Question at Heart

So with all of that said. Ask yourself this.

Is your boss bright, energetic, fun to be around, personable, honest, kind, empathetic, honest, candid, and have your best interest at heart?

Are they treating you like the product that is being sold? Are they providing you with the right direction at the right time? Are they continuously helping you to develop your skill sets? Do they teach you how to grow and expand? Do they empower you to lead and make decisions?

If the answer is no to one or many of these, it may seriously be time for you to fire them.

Like literally, just ask for a 1 on 1 and tell them that they are fired.

Tell them that they have failed at giving you what you deserve out of your career, your position, and your relationship as their employee.

Trust me, this is the LAST thing that any manager would ever...and I mean ever, want to hear.

Just remember, it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it. I’d focus on picking the right words and would not follow my exact verbiage to a T – which was designed to be more on the entertaining side.

But Really,

life is FAR to short. If you are a person who is willing to put in the work and do everything you can to continuously learn, grow, and expand, then you truly deserve to me mentored and coached by someone who has all of those characteristics and traits.

When we call them a “boss” we lose sight of what they really should be. Which is a

A Coach.

A Guide.

A book to learn from. A big ass jar of water to help you spring out from being a little weed into a big strong plant.

Go be a big strong plant.
